During this event for law students, George Gascón will discuss his background in public safety, his tenure as District Attorney in two counties, and the criminal justice reform policies he championed. About George Gascón
Born in Havana, Cuba, Gascón immigrated to Cudahy, California, at age 13. After serving in the U.S. Army, he joined the Los Angeles Police Department, where he rose to Assistant Chief of Police. From 2006 to 2009, he served as Police Chief of Mesa, Arizona, where he notably opposed Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s anti-immigration policies. In 2010, then-Mayor Gavin Newsom appointed him as San Francisco’s Police Chief, and in 2011, as the city’s District Attorney. He served in that role for eight years before returning to Los Angeles, where he was elected District Attorney and served from 2020 to 2024.
Recognized as a national leader in criminal justice reform, Gascón has been named among California’s Top 100 Lawyers by the Daily Journal and received the Anti-Defamation League’s Civil Rights Award for his contributions to justice and equality.
